My very dear doctor and friend,

I have taken a great many Surrealist photographs over the years. I took some with Eli Lotar. And even in a studio with electric lights and all the necessary elements, it takes hours of preparation to develop a poetic image, especially an expressive one, out of a group of inanimate objects.—And in the present case to carry out the idea of dressing a cane in cabbage leaves presents numerous technical obstacles; and then there is something that annoys me in this poem, and that is all the subconscious eroticism which it conceals and which it is the duty of all of us to destroy instead of lending it a hand. And for nothing in the world would I want this eroticism to appear in a photograph. The truth is that the consciousness of the child is ignorant of sexuality; when he does perceive it, it is because someone introduces it to him by means of images, bad example, or words. And we incur a grave responsibility when we put the consciousness of the child on that path. A great many songs written for children are similarly based on erotic myths, more or less concealed, and when we encounter one of these it is our duty to destroy it instead of emphasizing it, for actually the erotic perception of things is itself merely a surface covering, and when one probes a little deeper their sexual foundation disappears, for sexuality is only an unfortunate accident in nature, an accident which is largely the work of that god of darkness who is king and master of our unconscious and who is called Chance, but who is neither so innocent nor so irresponsible as everyone believes. What I am telling you here, Dr. Ferdiere, is discussed at length in the Cabala. For although I know little about Freud’s Psychoanalysis, or Jung’s, I have studied the Cabala very closely in the Zohar and the Sefer Yetsirah, and by their light as well as by that of several early Christian writers I have found an explanation of things which has satisfied me completely.—For like you I have asked myself a great many questions about the nature of everything that exists and I have always found the world very immoral and very unjust and above all very shameful.—You know that many works signed with my name are alas filled with blasphemies, hut as I have already told you, behind each blasphemy there was a reservation, for it has always seemed impossible to me that God should be the cause of the world that we see.
I have always felt that there was a Mystery behind all this and it took me 20 years of meditation, sufferings, and ordeals to succeed in understanding this Mystery and to arrive at an idea of things as they present themselves in reality.
When I did understand it I came back, quite simply, to the Religion of my fathers. And since then, as in the past two months, during which I have taken communion three times a week, every erotic thought has left me, and my conscience has found peace.
The Cabala, Dr. Ferdiere, has taught me many things about the origins of Evil and the antecedents of reality! And all these things were said by Christ in his brief stay on earth, they were said for him in appropriate language and indeed with some details that are terribly illuminating. But what Jesus Christ said on all these points no longer appears in the texts of the Gospels as we know them, because the truths that Jesus Christ uttered on this subject, although they inflamed human consciousness on Palm Sunday, were no longer admitted five days later, and this is why Jesus Christ was crucified on Holy Friday! Because in this interval of five days all those evil powers that drive our hearts to despair, everything that makes life so ugly and makes it appear to us in its entirety as a receptacle of crimes, of immorality, of disgrace, of egotism, of madness, and of slaughter, all these evil influences changed human consciousness so that it no longer accepted the truth of God. This Truth was, however, collected in full in the true text of the Gospels as they were known by the first Christians. And this is why in the first two or three centuries that followed the death of Christ this Truth preached by the first Apostles and their immediate successors won over all human hearts. And it was at this time that conversions were innumerable and that Christianity was established. Since then, and in proportion as it has grown away from the Teaching of the Church, the Christian idea has declined in human hearts. In the true Gospel of Christ, and in the Zohar which in its original text contains the actual word of the Father, one finds a description of the world as it was before the fall of Adam and one understands the origin of Evil, suffering, injustice, and iniquity and that it is not at all, but absolutely not the fault of God but that of man. And that man has become miserable and rejected only insofar as he has betrayed the original and angelic conception of things, and insofar as he has adopted sexuality.—Jesus Christ did not say, “Increase and multiply.” He said, “Increase and multiply as the Angels, for only then shall you attain a Number capable of acting on the heart of God.” Each time a sexual act is committed something is tainted in universal existence.
Because the universal unconscious is communal and there is an undeniable interreaction of all human acts. Eroticism is a transaction of darkness and in committing it we make the darkness rise in the light of Life.
In order to find a little Love around me on this earth, Dr. Ferdiere, I had to come to Rodez. I have suffered horribly from human wickedness in all the Asylums I have stayed in from 1937 to 1943. Only here have I found friends who have opened their hearts to me.
There is not an employee of this Asylum who does not give me a smile or an affectionate word when he meets me, who is not ready to do anything he can to help me. And one needs this in order to live, Dr. Ferdiere, the soul atrophies in an atmosphere of indifference, egotism, or enmity.
You yourself are a great mind and a great heart and I know that you too have gone to the bottom of things and that you have perceived the Truth. This truth is that the Universal Principle of Infinity, which is God and which is a Being, is very pure, very chaste, and very good and that it cannot help us to live if we betray it on any point whatsoever.
The song of Roudoudou is innocent in appearance, but at bottom it is not innocent at all. I think I understand rather well what it means and what it refers to. I also know atavistically where it comes from. I see rather clearly the idea of primitive onanism which is concealed beneath these words, just as the idea of sexual procreation is stated in the song:

I don’t know where it comes from
it’s one of those ancient adages
it says that since the world began
babies are born under cabbages.

In the occult tradition one learns that the cabbage is the form that the void assumes to manifest itself to human consciousness. I am not inventing this, I have read it in hooks on occultism and magic. Now according to these books it would appear that Satan, chance born of nonexistence, may have used this form to create the feminine sexual organ, etc., etc.
Well, Dr. Ferdiere, it is the duty of those of us who want no part of Evil to go beyond all these painful and destructive Myths. For further than and beyond all these baneful, degrading, and depressing libidinous images, the esoteric books teach us that the cane is the will of God, and that the woman he summoned before Him is Nature, before all else.
As for the leaves of the cabbage, they represent the Void, that is, nothing at all, since it was with nothing at all that God made everything. But in this Nothing at all he placed figures and Numbers 3—7 with 10—and up to 12, the number of maturity in forms and in the middle he threw the sign of the cross.
I thought about all this while composing this photograph. Unfortunately the objects did not lend themselves to the project and I am not at all satisfied with the result. But I do not see how to do better with these objects.
I am now going to make a second request. That nothing that will appear in this number of the “Meridien” series on Humor will cease at any moment to be edifying, that nothing will be found in it which is blasphemous or verges on blasphemy, or which from the point of view of eroticism or sexuality might lure the consciousness into a taste for these things, or which would show that the one who wrote, photographed, painted, or drew chose them in his will or in his heart, for this in all conscience would prohibit me from collaborating on the issue.
I tell you all this, Dr. Ferdiere, because I know that you cannot wish it.
Because you know all too well that eroticism is at the source of many mental illnesses and because your heart, which sees beyond this accidental and transient symbolism, wants the heart of the child to be pure and not to sink into sin; and I remember reading an article by you in a magazine which did me good, for beyond the sexual thing you had been able to show the exalted and chaste poetic idea which underlies the greatest myths, and by your article you had succeeded in destroying the sexual idea which was trying to cling to them.
And in the article that you are going to write on this song I know that this is what you will do again, because this is what people need most urgently.

With my very profound affection,
Antonin Artaud

Rodez 18 octobre 1943

ANTONIN ARTAUD
